Nine W pumping of 1480 nm light generated a discharge of ~130 um in half-width moving rapidly and leaving discrete voids along the fiber core, whereas 2-W-pumped discharge was ~27 um long, moved slowly and left nearly continuous thin voids. This is because 9-W-pumped discharge takes a longer time to travel its half-width, about 5/3 times longer than that of the 2-W-pumped discharge, which provides longer interaction time for modifying the fiber core." Their pump power dependences were investigated using a 1.48 um laser light at powers ranging from 1.1 to 9.0 W. Periodic voids were left by an optical discharge that was in a cavity with a tail. The tail appears because the optical discharge is strongly enclosed in core region. Another mode of periodic void formation was found at near the threshold pump power for fiber fuse propagation. The optical discharge in this case also forms a transient tail during the void formation cycle. On the basis of real-time observation of their fusing action, the mechanism of losing its transparency is discussed. The observed loss drop is found to be an overlap of decoupling of the circuit and transient light flux from the burned coating. The critical input power to blow out is expected to be raised by eliminating its insertion loss. Management of such data is generally very hard because each data is stored independently in various format. The data is structuralized and standardized by VSL, which has a hierarchy structure whose top layer has the same geometry of the combinatorial sample library. Each data is stored into the VSL systematically according to their coordinates in the library, the name of the measurements, and the dimension of the data. Thus, VSL can provide any data for analysis and visualization by specifying their identifying information. An actual example is demonstrated for the case of one-dimensional combinatorial glass sample library. Some tellurite glass libraries containing Er and F are annealed in a temperature-gradient furnace and the decay curves of 1.5 um-fluorescence of Er3+ are recorded along the libraries in order to find annealing conditions for precipitation of Er-containing fluoride crystals. Their fluorescence spectra, fluorescence lifetime, state of precipitates as a function of annealing conditions (7-dimensional data) are plotted in two figures through VSL. This structure was made by splicing single-mode silica fibers through TeO2 glass melt to form a necked bridge, which was coated with carbon-containing paint after quenching it. Optical fusing action was induced by 0.3--1.5 W of CW light (1.54 um) and its output power dropped by 12 dB on average. Optical decoupling seems to be induced by not only deformation but also crystallization of the glass bridge. Its quite a high insertion loss of about 2dB can be reduced by introducing some refractive index modulations into the present structure. To handle multi-dimensional data easily, a concept of virtual container for combinatorially acquired data is demonstrated which is called ``virtual sample library'' (VSL). VSL stores the data hierarchically in the order of (1) coordinates in the sample library, (2) names of the measurements performed, and (3) data obtained from each measurement. Thus, the stored data are accessed intuitively just by tracing this tree-like structure and are provided for visualization and sharing with others. This framework is constructed by the aid of an object-oriented scripting language which is good at abstracting complicated data structure. In this paper, after summarizing the problems of handling data acquired from combinatorially integrated samples and availabilities of software tools to solve them, the concept of VSL is proposed and its structure and functions are demonstrated on the basis of one specific experimental data. Its extensibility as a platform for numerical simulation is also discussed.
