To handle multi-dimensional data easily, a concept of virtual container for combinatorially acquired data is demonstrated which is called ``virtual sample library'' (VSL).  VSL stores the data hierarchically in the order of (1) coordinates in the sample library,
(2) names of the measurements performed, and (3) data obtained from each measurement.  Thus, the stored data are accessed intuitively just by tracing this tree-like structure and are provided for visualization and sharing with others.  This framework is constructed by the aid of an object-oriented scripting language which is good at abstracting complicated data structure.  In this paper, after summarizing the problems of handling data acquired from combinatorially integrated samples and availabilities of software tools to solve them, the concept of VSL is proposed and its structure and functions are demonstrated on the basis of one specific experimental data.  Its extensibility as a platform for numerical simulation is also discussed.

Its contents are readable, edit-able and retrievable within the attached network with user authentication.  This feature has enough merits that compensate for the difficulty in storing handwritings.  Moreover, the present system solved the problematic separated storage of experimental data and their supplemental descriptions, which are formerly recorded in hard disks and paper-based notebooks, respectively.  This all-in-one knowledge management system enables an automatic linking service from data files to related blog contents.  Its web-based nature also enables us to share the contents with colleagues over the net.  It is an alternative way of using large-scale top-down group-ware for small closed communities.

This style of log-keeping brings about the situation that our experimental data and their descriptions are recorded separately into hard disks and papers, respectively.  Such a data separation is likely to be a serious rate-limiting factor in high-throughput experimentation from the view point of getting feedback on each researcher's work from what he has done.  We propose to utilize a blog (Weblog) as an electronic research notebook and discuss technical requirements for maintaining it, on the basis of the blogging experience for four years by one of the authors.  We need a user-installed blog server with authentication function for personalization and network infrastructure enabling us to ``blog anytime, anywhere''.  Although some knowledge-sharing systems have similar electronic notebooks as their front-end, the present blog system is different from these because it stores personal information which is not meant to be shared with others.  This blog-based notebook cooperates with these e-notebooks by promoting hyperlinks among their contents, and acts as a personal informatics workbench providing connections to all the resources needed.

　検索と言えば、パソコンのハードディスクに溜っていくファイルもしかり。キーワードを与えると全文検索してくれる機能もあるが、現れた複数の候補ファイルのどれが本命なのか？
　そんな悩みを解決するために、実験ノートと研究業績リストを電子化してみた。後者は各業績毎に関連するファイルへのリンクを埋め込んだものである。これが結構使えることが分かり、予期せぬご利益も授かった。そのあらましをご紹介する。

Such a list was constructed with the aid of reference management software (BIBTeX) and a scripting language (Ruby).  Automatic incorporation in the author's home page makes it easy to disseminate the author's achievements.
